The MacBook and PowerBook range of laptops marketed under the Apple Macintosh name were introduced by the Apple company in the 1990s. The Macbook line signified the companies shift to Intel based hardware in 2006. Aimed at the consumer and education markets the macbook has been the single best selling laptop brand in the USA. Using pioneering polycarbonate and fiberglass structures the Macbook range set a new standard of lightweight and ultra robust machines.
The PowerBook range and i-Book (iBook) range of notebooks have since been discontinued by Apple. The Powerbook was originallty targeted at high end users as the name suggests, and one many awards including design excellence awards and "laptop of the year" for 2005. The lower end iBook range and the PowerBook models have since been replaced by the MacBook families of machines. Having all their models known as just "MacBook" can cause problems identifying the correct replacement screen and so many Apple machines require the screen to be removed and an LCD model number to be supplied prior to purchase.
