Samsung Designs Bendable Smartphone Displays 12. November 2013 tori Laptop Screen News (0) Bendable Smartphone displays At a reccent analyst day, (held in South Korea,) Samsung announced plans to design bendable Smartphone displays. Samsung also used the day to discuss current (and future) business strategies. These discussions, (centred on the creation of bendable displays,) come a month after the corporation unveiled the Galaxy Round, (complete with curved screen, as pictured below.) Though bendable phone displays are not a new concept, major companies such as Apple have struggled to design equally flexible inner components for such devices. In that vein, Samsung have been working on the design (and development) of sufficiently bendy batteries.

Dell Reports Drastic Profit Drop: Will Tablets continue to Outperform Traditional Laptops? 17. May 2013 tori Laptop Screen News (0) Is Dell's drop in profits indicative of the the death of traditional laptops? Yesterday one of the world’s leading laptop manufacturers, Dell, reported a 79% drop in their profits for the first quarter of the financial year. Dell’s experience stands in stark contrast to that of key tablet manufacturers, (among them Apple and Samsung.) As IDC, (a global provider of market information) notes, shipments of tablet devices have continued to surge, totalling 49.2 million units in the first quarter of 2013. (http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24093213 ) Dell has been attempting to compensate for its poor performance in the computer market by providing its customers with other products such as business software and hardware for servers. The future of the laptop industry Traditional laptops vs. tablets Is Dell's attempt to branch out into other services a sign of the future? Despite the recent development of a broad variety of hybrid laptops by a number of key manufacturers, (including Dell,) the future of the laptop industry seems less than certain. Will traditional laptops soon be devices from a forgotten era? Does the future belong to the tablet and touchscreen technology? Are we witnessing the end of one age and the beginning of another? Analysts suggest that one of the only ways key laptop manufacturers will be able to compete with tablet devices is by designing an affordable, easily portable machine with excellent all round specifications. If such a product were to appear, perhaps the computer industry could be reenergized. Which do you prefer: the traditional laptop or the tablet?
New Gadget Which Transforms Smartphone Into Laptop 10. May 2013 tori Laptop Screen News (0) John Andrus invents a device that turns a smartphone into a laptop Edmonton businessman John Andrus has invented a device called the Casetop which allows users to transform their smartphone, temporarily, into a fully operational laptop. Though still raising funds for the device’s mass production, and continuing with his job as a network administrator, Andrus is adamant that his invention will represent a new step in computing technology. About the Casetop The invention in detail Markedly smaller than a Macbook, the Casetop comes equipped with an 11.1 inch HD screen and a full size keyboard, (for those who find it difficult to navigate around a small smartphone screen.) On its front is a bar in which can be placed any model of smartphone; the mobile acting as the laptop’s information centre. The Casebook is also equipped with a 56 watt battery which charges the connected smartphone whilst the device as a whole is being used. Andrus' future plans Having produced a prototype, Andrus is now attempting to raise money to have the Casetop mass produced. In a bid to raise the necessary funds, he is utilising Kick-starter, an online organisation which allows people to invest in businesses of their choosing in exchange for merchandise rather than financial shares. Should this method of fundraising prove successful, Livi Design, (Andrus’ technology firm,) will approach Chinese manufacturers.
New Apple Patent Reveals Hybrid Laptop 5. April 2013 tori Laptop Screen News (0) Are Apple developing a hybrid laptop? Recently, a new patent by Apple has appeared on the internet which provides details of a hybrid machine, part laptop, part touch-screen tablet. Drawings indicate that the touch screen, (as in other present hybrid machines,) would be detachable, drawing its charge from a wireless system in the laptop’s hinge. Will Apple maunfacture this new model? Patent: new design or innovative idea? Though interesting designs, the jury is still out as to whether these drawings are indicative of a future Apple product or whether they are merely representative of countless innovative ideas floating around Apple HQ. Various sources suggest that Apple has stated on numerous occasions that it is not particularly fond of the inclusion of touch screen technology within laptops. Perhaps such statements provide further evidence that these designs represent just one more peripheral idea rather than concrete proof of the company’s future plans. At present, the question remains: have Apple changed their minds, or is this just one more innovative idea that will never be realized?

Touch-Screen Laptops: Irreversible Trend or Technological Fad? 7. January 2013 tori Laptop Screen News (0) Do touch-screen laptops represent an irreversible trend? In a recent interview, the president of Acer, Jim Wong, suggested that touch screen laptops will eventually come to dominate the computing market. Mr.Wong supported his assertion by pointing to internal research conducted by Acer which found that PC users, after having used a touch screen for a short while, naturally gravitated towards that mode of navigation. From such findings, Mr.Wong sought to conclude that the current tide of touch screen laptops constituted an “irreversible” electronic “trend,” rather than a transient technological fad. Touch-screen laptops Will Windows 8 hinder, rather than help, progress? Whilst Mr. Wong was optimistic about the future of touch screen laptops, however, he was less enthusiastic about the software upon which such machines usually operate, Windows 8, suggesting that Microsoft’s decision to launch an entirely new operating system, (the intricacies of which must then be re-learned by consumers) would prevent it from becoming an “immediate hit.” Despite these misgivngs though, Mr.Wong maintained that the criticisms leveled against Windows 8 have been somewhat unfair.
Are See Through Screens a Sign of the Future? 19. December 2012 tori Laptop Screen News (0) Are see through screens a sign of the future? Earlier this year, HP was granted a patent on see through screen technology. Such screens would, strangely, as the name suggests, be see through, meaning that the machine user could view both what is on their screen and what lies behind it. To what uses could such technolgy be put? HP has submitted some ideas: the projection of advertisement campaigns onto building windows and the playing of extensive navigation directions on car windscreens. See though screens in detail Could they pose privacy problems? In some cases, worries have beem raised regarding the question of privacy. If screens are transparent, will individuals on the other side of them be able to see your personal information? HP has addressed this problem, suggesting that one’s privacy would be protected through the projection of a different image on either side of the screen. What will they look like? Though this patented technology is yet to be put to active use, HP has crafted several concept videos of its potential, (see the photos below.) HP, however, isn't the only major computing business interested in see through screen technology: Samsung has also shown interest, recently releasing an early, video conceptualization of a bendable and transparent tablet. Are see through screens a sign of the future? Only time will tell.
